What is Pilates and what can it do for you?
Based on the teachings of Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a series of exercises to develop physical strength, coordination, flexibility and joint mobility, as well as reducing stress, improving mental focus and creating a sense of well being.
As Pilates gains popularity, more is heard about a strong core or powerhouse, but what is the core and why does it need to be strong? Imagine the core as a cylinder in the middle of your body. As the muscles of the cylinder work together and get stronger, so your arms and legs are better able to move more efficiently, without putting strain on your spine or other parts of your body.
By working the core, Pilates can help you develop strong postural control, leaving you feeling fitter and stronger, more flexible and more aware of how your body moves. Don’t take my word for it, come along and try it out for yourself!
More and more health care professionals are recommending pilates to help in recovery from illness and injury.
Who is Pilates for?
Pilates is for everyone. For men and women of all ages, shapes and sizes, and every fitness level. For people with limited and reduced mobility, or rehabilitating from an injury or illness. For those wishing to take post-natal exercise and for those who want to increase to, or maintain a high level of exercise and fitness.
